30 JanMental Performance Training for Athletes: Lukin Center’s Sport and Performance Program by Stephen Neer, MS, LPC As we move into 2026, the Lukin Center for Psychotherapy is expanding our commitment to supporting athletes across New Jersey through comprehensive mental performance training and sports psychology services. I’m Stephen Neer, a Licensed Professional Counselor and co-Director of the Sport and Performance Program alongside my wife, Jessica Colucci. Together, we’re bringing evidence-based mental health support to student-athletes, coaches, and families throughout Northern New Jersey. Lukin Center Becomes Official Mental Health Sponsor of Super Football Conference In August 2025, the Lukin Center for Psychotherapy achieved a significant milestone by becoming the official mental health sponsor of the Super Football Conference. This partnership represents a major step forward in addressing the mental health needs of young athletes in our community. The Super Football Conference encompasses 112 schools across New Jersey, fostering and developing thousands of student-athletes who participate in competitive football programs. Through this partnership, we’re providing direct mental health support, educational trainings, and resources to help these young athletes thrive both on and off the field. From Athlete to Sports Psychologist: A Personal Journey My path to becoming a sports performance specialist began with my own athletic career. Growing up, I participated in multiple sports before focusing on baseball. When an injury sidelined me from competition, I experienced a profound identity crisis—a challenge many athletes face when their playing days end unexpectedly. This difficult period sparked my interest in the psychological aspects of athletic performance and identity. I pursued my undergraduate degree in psychology, followed by a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. Throughout my career as a therapist, I’ve primarily worked with children and adolescents, always maintaining a special focus on athletes and their unique mental health needs. When Dr. Konstantin Lukin approached Jessica and me about developing a comprehensive program for athletes and performers, it felt like the perfect alignment of my professional training and personal passion. The subsequent opportunity to partner with the Super Football Conference transformed this vision into reality, allowing me to work directly with my favorite population—young athletes navigating the pressures of competitive sports. New Resources: Monthly Blog and The Athlete Couch Podcast To expand our reach and better communicate our mission, we’re launching two new resources in 2026: Monthly Blog Posts Each month, I’ll be sharing insights on topics relevant to youth athletics, sports psychology, and mental performance. These posts will provide practical strategies that athletes, parents, and coaches can implement immediately. The Athlete Couch Podcast Jessica and I are excited to introduce The Athlete Couch, a monthly podcast exploring all aspects of youth athletics while providing a behind-the-scenes look at our work as psychotherapists and program directors. Our first episode is now live, featuring an in-depth conversation with co-Director Jessica Colucci. After 13 years together, I found it both enjoyable and enlightening to interview my wife in this professional context—hearing her discuss her passion for supporting young athletes reminded me why we make such an effective team. The Mind-Body Connection in Athletic Performance A core principle guiding our sport and performance program is that the mind sets the standard for physical achievement. Athletic performance isn’t purely physical—it’s fundamentally influenced by mental preparation, emotional regulation, and psychological resilience. We’re developing comprehensive training programs that address all facets of athletic performance, including: Mental skills training: Visualization, self-talk, concentration, and pre-performance routines Performance psychology: Managing pressure situations, competition anxiety, and performance slumps Team dynamics: Communication, cohesion, leadership, and role clarity Injury recovery support: Psychological rehabilitation, maintaining identity, and return-to-play anxiety Life skills development: Time management, academic balance, and transition planning Growing Team of Sports Mental Health Specialists Our sport and performance team continues to expand with caring, knowledgeable professionals who share our passion for supporting athletes. Each team member brings specialized training in working with athletic populations and understands the unique pressures facing student-athletes in today’s competitive environment. We’re excited to introduce you to these wonderful professionals in upcoming content, showcasing the depth of expertise available through the Lukin Center’s Sport and Performance Program. Evidence-Based Approaches for Athletic Mental Health The Lukin Center’s sport and performance services are grounded in evidence-based therapeutic approaches proven effective for athletes: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Athletes CBT helps athletes identify and modify unhelpful thought patterns that interfere with performance. By developing healthier cognitive strategies, athletes can manage performance anxiety, overcome mental blocks, and maintain focus under pressure. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) ACT teaches athletes to accept uncomfortable thoughts and emotions rather than fighting against them, while remaining committed to performance goals and values. This approach is particularly effective for managing pre-competition anxiety and perfectionism. Mindfulness-Based Interventions Mindfulness training enhances athletes’ present-moment awareness, helping them maintain concentration during competition and recover more effectively between performances. Comprehensive Mental Health Services at Lukin Center Beyond our sport and performance program, the Lukin Center offers comprehensive mental health services across seven convenient locations in Northern New Jersey: Chatham Englewood Hoboken Jersey City Montclair Ridgewood Westfield Our practice provides specialized treatment for children and adolescents, individual therapy for adults, couples counseling, and family therapy.
